August 8, 2008 Boston BioCom announced that it has established BacTek Therapeutics LLC as a wholly owned subsidiary focused on the development of bacteriocins against multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Bacteriocins are naturally occurring small peptides with anti-microbial activity that are produced in bacterial ribosomes as a defense mechanism against other bacteria. They have been found to be effective against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and these peptides can be selected for either broad-spectrum activity or for highly specific activity against particular strains. BacTek Therapeutics has been created to harness a significant body of expertise on bacteriocins and to develop a rich library of potential candidates for therapeutic applications that affect millions of people, such as infectious diseases where drug resistance is a growing concern.
